"The implications of the rarity of the Illuminated Books were recognized early on and there is a long history of attempts to reproduce them. Of these, the editions produced and published by the Trianon Press for the William Blake Trust are the most faithful and complete: but because they were issued only in small editions, these Blake Trust facsimiles have themselves become rare books.
Recognizing that its purposes to make the Illuminated Books widely available had not been realized, the Blake Trust initiated a Collected Edition, intended to compromise 5 volumes but, in the event, making 6. The first two volumes, 'Jerusalem' and 'Songs of Innocence and of Experience', were published in 1991. Volume 3, 'The Early Illuminated Books' and Volume 5, 'Milton a Poem' followed in 1993. Volumes 4 and 6, published in 1995, complete the series.
The volumes are produced in uniform format to very high standards of reproduction, printing, binding and materials. Fine copies of the Books have been newly and meticulously photographed and the best modern technology has been applied to ensure that Blake's originals are reproduced as faithfully as possible. The Books are fully edited by leading Blake scholars. Thanks to substantial subvention the volumes are issued at prices which at least make these master work accessible, in authoritative editions, to anyone with more than a passing interest in Blake." - from the blurb on the back of the dj of volume 6.
