"The exhibition of the seven "Texas" houses at the Institute and this catalog are the first extensive documentation of this 2nd phase of Hejduk's work. And if it is possible to relate Hejduk's work in the context of the above generational structure, it can be seen that the period of the seven "Texas" houses corresponds roughly to the 10 year period when young architects went into teaching.
Hejduk's generation between 1945 and 1955 was taught a version of modern architecture by teachers who were essentially trained in the pre war Beaux Arts system. Mies, Gropius, and Wright were the initial "modern" influences on these students. In this context, where asymmetrical and contrapuntal dynamics were thought to be the touchstone of modernism, the introduction of the dominant theme of a classical nine-square parti in the "Texas" houses was both anachronistic and seemingly academic, as it is perhaps both an  anachronistic and refreshing today."
