Gulistan or Rose Garden of Sa'di. Printed by the Kama Shastra Society

The Gulistan or Rose Garden of Sa'di. Printed by the Kama Shastra Society for private subscribers only. Benares, 1888. Faithfully translated into English (no attribution). 5 1/4" x 8 3/4" 282 pages hardcover with no dust jacket. White vellum binding with beveled edges. Gilt title and edges on spine may be a little faded, but still quite legible. No date on the bottom of the spine. Moderate cover edge wear. Some soiling to the covers. Maybe soiling to the top of the page block with "SEX RESEARCH/ THE LANGLEY PORTER CLINIC" rubber stamped on the top of the page block. Rough edges to the pages, seems to be from publication, but perhaps many had to be separated to read. Multiple 'Langley Porter' stamps inside the front and back covers. A number of pencil notations on the front endpapers. Remnants of what may have been a check-out label inside the back cover. Paper is lightly tanned. A fade mark from the outline of a paperclip on the back flyleaf. I find no other previous owner markings. No other tears, folds or creases to pages. Binding is tight with no looseness to pages. Not ex-library, not remaindered and not a facsimile reprint. For sale by Jon Wobber, bookseller since 1978. ID01a

"A famous work by the Persian poet Sheikh Muslih-uddin Sa'di Shirazi (1193-1291) in a famous translation by Edward Rehatsek, even more famed due its publication by the Kama Shastra Society, a fictitious organization formed by Sir Richard Francis Burton and Forster Fitzgerald Arbuthnot in 1883 to avoid the censorship Obscene Publications Act of 1857. The Society continued to Burton's death in 1890, but this was the last book of five that were published." from another seller.
