History of Sacramento County, California, with Illustrations Descriptive of Its Scenery, Residences, Public Buildings, Fine Blocks, and Manufactories. 1880

History of Sacramento County, California, with Illustrations Descriptive of Its Scenery, Residences, Public Buildings, Fine Blocks, and Manufactories. Thompson & West Publishers. Oakland California. 1880. Cloth covers with leather spine. This is a big heavy book. I weigh it as more than 8 lbs. 1.7 lbs, Binding feels a little loose, created by the shear weight of the book. The binding does not appear to have been reinforced or repaired after publication. There is bright gilt decoration and lettering to the front cover, quite faded on the leather spine. There is significant wear to the spine and cover edges. Fly leafs, both front and back are all creased and folded, None of the text are pages creased. The first flyleaf is quite worn due to being folded outside the book There is a sticker of previous ownership inside the front cover, also that of D. Hicks and Co. San Francisco whom I find in a 1878 S.F. Directory to be a book binder, possibly the original. THe frontispiece has been torn from the book, without tearing into the illustration, remains laid in the book. There is a three inch or so tear in the fold out map but no pieces are missing. THere is sign of some moisture inside the back cover, but none in the rest of the book. Not Ex-Library, Not Book Club, Not Print on Demand. Selling books since 1978. I have tried to name all the flaws. there may be more, but that is what I see.

"The 294 pages of text and 221 engravings give a comprehensive look at the county, and its citizens, its organizations, and its industries in 1880." (from an ad for the cd book) but ours doesn't need a computer, with which to browse it. special. this is 'the earliest comprehensive history of the Sacramento Region. The illustrations clearly distinguish the Thompson & West imprints from other contemporary county histories: rather than the usual array of pioneer portraits, the lithographic plates in this volume depict in exceptional detail, albeit in a somewhat idyllic and stylized manner, businesses, residences, ranch scenes, etc., all with informative captions.'
