"Elena Guro (pen name of Eleanora Genrikhovna von Notenberg, 1877-1913) was one of the most unusual figures of Russian Futurism. This most raucous of Russian literary movements was dominated by men- Mayakovsky, Kamensky, Kruchenykh, the Burlinks, etc.- plebians who scandalized the old cultural establishment. But beside them was Guro, a general's daughter, the quiet creator of delicate prose and poetry. The lyricism of her impressionistic prose miniatures is unexpected in any writer participating in such famous Futurist manifestoes as 'A Hatchery for Judges', although the blurring of the line between verse and prose is characteristic of the movement.
Guro was also a professional artist (she studied under Bakst and Dobuzhinsky, among others), and several of the stylized drawings she provided for the original edition of 'The Little Camels of the Sky' are reproduced in this English version.
As Markov says in his 'History of Russian Futurism', "Guro is probably the most neglected among the early Russian futurists, a fate that is undeserved, because she is one of the very original and talented Russian writers.""
