She was christened Ursula (a diminutive of ‘Ursa,’ a she bear), because she was to slay ‘the bear’—i.e. the devil. She resolved to become a nun, but was sought in marriage by the heathen son of a ‘certain most ferocious tyrant,’ who threatened to waste the land with fire and sword if she refused. As the result of a vision, in which was revealed her future martyrdom, Ursula consented on condition that she was allowed as companions ten noble virgins who, like Ursula, were to have each a thousand attendant virgins and a ship. The prince was, moreover, to become a Christian. The eleven ships, with Pinnosa, Ursula's chief companion, as admiral, after cruising for three years round the British coasts, sailed up the Rhine to Cologne and to Basel, whence Ursula and her companions went on foot to Rome. Returning to Cologne, which had meanwhile been seized by the Huns, they were massacred in 238, Ursula being slain by an arrow. The inhabitants after the withdrawal of the Huns buried them with more than mortal honours, and built a church outside the walls, which was rebuilt on a grander scale long afterwards at the bidding of one Clematius, a wise man from the east. -Unknown Source

Wayne Thiebaud; Karen Tsujimoto; Washington (1985); 1st; VGVG; Folio; Not Ex-Library, Not Book Club, Not Print on Demand; Dj-Multi-color pictorial w/white lettering to front, blue to spine, almost no perceptible edgewear, brodart protected; Dj- White w/multi-color pictorial to front, purple + black lettering to spine, very minimal edgewear; Hb- Dark blue w/title blind stamped to front, gilt to spine, almost no perceptible edgewear; 207pps- clean, flat, numerous color plates; Endpages-Pink w/previous owner's name blindstamped to front endpage.

A wonderfully ungimmicky, artist, Thiebaud belongs more to a classical tradition of painting than to the Pop revolution that first propelled him to national attention in the 1960s. Included are roughly 300 pieces ranging from the youthfully whimsical (a portly man w/a snail for a hat), to the beautifully dark (an arsonist cloaked in flames), to the bleakly humorous (a man resting his bandaged hands around either side of a bladed penis), to the horrifically erotic (a man laps the blood out of his lover's gaping chest wound). -From Carl Lyon: Monsters at Play

GIANT OTTO; Du BOIS, William Pene; Viking (1936);1st ; Square 16mo; P/G; NotEx-Library, Not Book Club, Not Print on Demand; HARD BACK-multicolor pictorial w/blue+ red edgewear/bumping, small stains, some scuffing, slight curve;DUST JACKET-Multi-color pictorial w/blue + red lettering, very edgeworn, heavily scuffed, blue penciling on rear; 38ppgs- paginated bright, crisp edges, aging to pages, light staining; Endpages- staining mainly due to acidic binder’s glue.

WilliamPene du Bois was a widely recognized author and illustrator of children'sbooks. Kiki and the Sheep Man, an odd fellow who wears a sheepskin and speaks in a toneless rush, visit the narrator in visions that lead him to two mysteries, one metaphysical (how to survive the unsurvivable) and the other physical (a call girl's murder). In his searchings, he encounters a clairvoyant 13-year-old, her misguided parents and a one-armed poet. All the hallmarks of Murakami's greatness are here: restless and sensitive characters, disturbing shifts into altered reality, silky smooth turns of phrase and a narrative with all the momentum of a roller coaster. Until that point, most children’s books were illustrated with wood engravings that were locked into the printing press form along with set type.Coloring these images generally entailed using hand-colored stencils or employing a system of printing with wood blocks inked with colors–a system that was labor intensive and frustrating..McLoughlin Brothers was among the earliest American children’s book publishers to experiment with the new chromolithographic technology. By the 1870s, McLoughlin Brothers also developed a notorious reputation as a publisher of unauthorized reissues of British picture books, including those issued by English picture book publisher Frederick Warne & Co., whose books were imported from London by Scribner, Welford, and Armstrong–a branch of Charles Scribner and Company. It is probably no accident that a vitriolic letter penned by English illustrator Walter Crane attacking the McLoughlin Bros.’ gaudy and unauthorized reproduction of his Baby’s Opera appeared in the September 1877 issue of Scribner’s Monthly.

(Pictuered beside the Mcluoghlin version) is the illustration and music for “I saw Three Ships” published in London George Routledge & Sons; the illustrations are engraved on wood and printed in color by Crane’s collaborator Sir Edmund Evans. It is an elegant piece of color relief printing; note the muted shades of yellow, violet, and peach worn by the three angels. In the hands of McLoughlin Brothers, Evans’ wood engravings are turned into chromolithographs, and the colors are robust shades of purple, orange, and green; the pale tint of the angels skin in Evans’ hands becomes a more life-like hue in the McLoughlin version, giving the angels the look of actual young girls dressed like angels. Both versions are beautiful, but they are an apple and an orange, and at a retail cost of 75 cents, the McLoughlin version was clearly cheaper to produce and purchase; the cost of the Routledge edition was probably well over a dollar and possibly double the cost of the McLoughlin copy. This pioneering work collects an amazing assemblage of court cases in which animals have been named as defendants--chickens, rats, field mice, bees, gnats, and (in 34 recorded instances) pigs, among others-- providing insight into such modern issues as animal rights, capital punishment, and social and criminal theory. Evans suggests an intriguing distinction between trials of specific animals or particular crimes, such as the "murder" of an infant by a pig, and trials for larger, catastrophic events, such as plagues and infestations. In the latter case, Evans suggests a parallel to witchcraft. Pages numbered to page 101. The tipped in plates uniquely printed on a tissue paper. There is the remnant of a price sticker on the front cover and a former bookseller discrete pencil marking on the first blank page. I can't tell if the multi-colored embossment on the front cover is worn or faded, but is still very attractive. The gilt lettering on the spine is bright and unfaded. Otherwise, there are no previous owner markings in the book (highlighting or otherwise) no creases or folds to the pages. Binding is tight with no looseness to the pages. (Not ex-library, but an edition designed to be sent to libraries) (1963) First Edition - stated. Hardcover with no dust jacket. Illustrated cloth cover. Light cover wear. Cover a bit soiled, particularly on the back cover. Inside the front cover is a label thatr has been partially removed: "Holt, Rinehart and Winston, Inc....return postage guaranteed...e return to children's book dept." My guess is that some copies of this book were sent to some libraries to see if they wanted to purchase to be placed in the library. This copy may have been sent to somebody for their review, and we don't know if the book was ebver returned, but it obviously did not remain in the Holt Chidren's Dept. My guess is that these copies are quite scarce not having been processed by a library. I see no reference to a copylike this either in bibliography or on line. I would certainly accept ffeedback in this regard. Not ex-library, not remaindered, not a facsimile reprint. More photos available on request. For sale by Jon Wobber, bookseller since 1978.
