Don Quixote by Miguel de Cervantes. First Modern Library Edition. Ozell's Revision Of Translation By Peter Motteux; Intro By Herschel Brickell. Stated 1st Modern Library Edition. Modern Library #174. Dust jacket illustration by Wuyts. I don't know who Wuyts is. This person appears to have done other Modern Library dust jackets during about the same period of time. DUST JACKET: Has a number of fairly large chips on the edges. Edge wear. Not price-clipped. Discolored spine. Front joint of the dj appears to have been reinforced by scotch tape. Now protected in mylar dust jacket cover. BOOK: Light bumping to cover tips. Bright gilt lettering and decoration on spine. Light cover edge wear. Pages lightly tanned, but no sign of brittleness. Two light spots 1/4" in diameter on the back cover. Star rubber stamped inside back cover. Otherwise pages are clean with no previous owner markings that I find, and without tears, folds or creases. Binding is tight with no looseness to pages. Not ex-library, not remaindered, not a facsimile reprint. More photos available on request. For sale by Jon Wobber, bookseller since 1978. CF21a

"The Modern Library is an American publishing company. Founded in 1917 by Albert Boni and Horace Liveright as an imprint of their publishing company Boni & Liveright, it was purchased in 1925 by Bennett Cerf and Donald Klopfer. Random House began in 1927 as a subsidiary of the Modern Library but eventually overtook its parent to become the parent company of what then only became an imprint of Random House." - Wikipedia

Modern Library, while all reprints, has been collected because of the quality of translations chosen, the quality of binding and printing, and the compactess of the books. - My own opinion. I do not know if this particular copy is a first state, but as of time of this listing, this appears to be the earliest state listed on the common websites.
