The beloved West Marin historian Jack Mason (1911-1986) founded an informal museum in his Inverness home, which became the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History in 1986. A retired newspaper editor with deep roots in Inverness, he set to work in the 1960s chronicling histories for the local newspaper and collecting photographs and memorabilia. Jack eventually published eight books and a quarterly journal, the Point Reyes Historian. He opened his historic 1893 Inverness house, The Gables, to the public, graciously greeting guests in his Victorian parlor and telling stories of old West Marin. Jack Mason left his vast history collection and house to the people of West Marin through an arrangement with his daughter and the Inverness Foundation. Fulfilling his wishes, the Inverness Library, a branch of the Marin County Free Library system, and the Jack Mason Museum of West Marin History now occupy his beautiful but humble residence. - From Jack Mason Museum website.
