"José García Payón was a Mexican archaeologist. He was born in the city of Chalchihuites , Zacatecas, on August 29, 1896. He completed his secondary studies at the Louis Le Grand School in Paris ; between 1914 and 1916 he attended the Lycée Puget in Marseille, France. He made numerous trips that allowed him to have a very broad concept of civilization. [ 1 ]
In 1929, he was appointed head of the Department of Archaeology of the government of the State of Mexico. He began archaeological explorations in Tecaxic- Calixtlahuaca between 1930 and 1938, paying special attention to monumental architecture. He carried out excavations in Matlatzinca and Malinalco and later in central Veracruz, particularly in Cempoala , El Tajín and Huaxteca , to pave the way for future archaeological research in those regions, establishing the theoretical foundations for their cultural development, to the point that today a photo library bears his name.
García Payón served as director of the Central Public Library of the State of Mexico , a position he held until 1934. At that time, the state's Archaeology Museum was founded, following current research and museography guidelines acquired during his stays in various countries.
In 1936 he joined the Department of Monuments, which two years later became the INAH, an institution for which he conducted research at archaeological sites in the states of Mexico and Guerrero; he also undertook an extensive tour of Totonacapan , Veracruz . He was one of the founders of the Faculty of Anthropology at the University of Veracruz, in 1957, an institution where he carried out much of his research. In addition, he was a researcher at the Institute of Anthropology at the same University of Veracruz. It was during those years that he settled in Xalapa, the city where he would die years later." - Wikipedia
