Montana Frontier by Merrill G. Burlingame. INSCRIBED BY BURLINGAME.

Montana Frontier by Merrill G. Burlingame. State Publishing Company, Helena Montana, 1942. With illustrationa, maps and charts. 418 pages. First edition. INSCRIBED BY AUTGHOR, MERRILL BURLINGAME - "For Mrs. Call/ With appreciation for/ strong supportin in (sic.)/ the Madison Valley/ Merrill G. Burlingame". The incsription does not show well because it is written over the map on the front end paper. Maroon cloth has wear to the extremites, mostly the bottom of the spine. The gilt lettering on the spine appears slightly faded, but still pronounced, while the gilt letteirng on the front cover appears bright. There is an unintended pencil marking on the leading edge of the page block and a discrete bookseller's pencil price on the front endpaper. Inside the back cover is a discrete bookseller's sticker. Otherwise, there are no previous owner markings in the book. I found 2 interior pages (one of which is pictured here) with creases 1/4 way down the page.  Pages are not dog-eared. Binding is tight with no looseness to the pages. Not ex-Library, Not Facsimile, Not Print-on-demand. BG13a

"Merrill G. Burlingame (March 13, 1901 – November 14, 1994) was a history professor at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana who specialized in Montana history and the history of the American West. He was instrumental in the founding of the Museum of the Rockies and driving force behind the resurgence of the Montana Historical Society in the 1960s. In his time, he was known as "Mr. Montana History. Burlingame was instrumental in the establishment of the Museum of the Rockies with physician Caroline M. McGill, a Butte, Montana physician, who was a noted collector of Montana antiquities.[7] Burlingame was appointed the first museum director in December 1959. He helped preserve the Montana-related records of the Works Progress Administration Federal Writers' Project.[8] He was a founding member of the Gallatin County Historical Society and Pioneer Museum in 1977, which as of 2014 is located in the building housing the original Gallatin County jail.

The Montana Historical Society annually recognizes the historical research and writings of undergraduate and graduate students in history with its Merrill G. Burlingame and K. Ross Toole award.[11] The Special Collections and Archives of the Montana State University Library are named after Burlingame.[12] His work The Montana Frontier first published in 1942 is considered a seminal work of Montana history." - Wikipdia
